The Storm
Remember me telling you about seal #12. We called her ‘Storm.’ Well there was a reason for that… Would you like to know why?

While we were working with this seal a snow storm was-a-brewing. Now, you might be asking yourself, how did we not know a storm was heading our way. Well, the weathermen said the storm wasn’t due until later in the evening but much to our surprise, it arrived sooner than expected. That, and the fact we were ‘sheltered’ from the storm behind Tent Island (a rather large island in the middle of the sea ice) -- so it caught us a bit off guard. As soon as we realized the storm was upon us, we started to head out. Luckily we were prepared. Safety first, right? Our hut was nearby. We made it to the hut – but just in the nick of time.

The Shelter
So, what does one do for two days while stuck in a small hut with six other people?

You play games…
We probably spent at least 7 hours playing cards. But these were no ordinary cards, we actually made our own deck out of paper. Paper? Are you surprised? Well I have to admit, the paper we used was called ‘rite in the rain’ paper and it is much more durable that regular ole paper. Here, take a look and out deck of cards.

You sleep…
I have to admit, it was a little cramped with 6 of us sleeping in a small hut. But it was better that sleeping in a tent! Here I am after a ‘good night’ sleep. Don’t I look well rested?

You eat…
Camping on the ice! What’s better? I bet you can’t beat the dinner we had. Want to know what is was? Chicken and rice, mac and cheese, and Oreos for desert. Yum!

We sure were glad to get back to base and have a ‘real’ home cooked meal!
The calm before the storm
I guess you have to take the good with the bad down here. The storm, well, it could be considered’ bad’ even though it was exciting to sleep in a hut. I’m always up for new adventures!
