Postcards from the Pole
…Or close to the South Pole anyway – that is if you consider about 850 miles away close?
But that’s as close as I’ll get during my upcoming trip to McMurdo Station, Antarctica. And while I’m there, I’ll be mailing postcards back to the States.
So… Do you have friends, neighbors, relatives, or classmates that you would like to send a postcard? I’d be happy to take them all with me and mail them back. Don’t forget to send one to yourself - too!
I plan to send half-a-dozen to myself because I’ve never received any mail from Antarctica.
If you would like to receive a Postcard from Antarctica follow these easy steps!
Step 1: Buy a postcard
Antarctic Postcards- Pre-stamped postcards can be purchased at any US post office (or at the Pink Palace museum gift shop) for a cost of .32 cents each.
These standard size postcards (3 ½ x 5 ½) are a quick and easy option. My favorite choice!
Step two: Place appropriate postage on the card
- If you did not purchase a pre-stamped postcard, use the following table for appropriate postage.
Postcard Size/Postage***
Minimum size 3 ½ inches x 5 inches - .29
Between these two sizes - .29
Maximum size 4 ½ inches by 6 inches - .44
*** The Post Office will NOT allow 3x5 cards
Step three: Complete the return address
- Please remember to print legibly
- Be sure the address has the recipients full name, complete address, zip code and country.
Step four: Write a note to the recipient in the appropriate space
Be sure to write a special note to whomever you send the postcard to!Step five: Bring or send completed postcard(s) to the Pink Palace Museum by January 1, 2012:
- There will be a ‘drop box’ in the Pink Palace lobby through January 1st.
Don't you just love our upside down Christmas Tree!!!
- If you are not able to drop off the postcards – please mail them to the following address:
Alex Eilers
Pink Palace Museum
3050 Central Ave.
Memphis, TN 38111
- Make sure you put it in an envelope – so you don’t void the stamp.
Postcards will be returned
- I will mail the postcards from the U.S. post office at McMurdo Station to the address you provided.
- Each card will be postmarked with the unique ‘Antarctica’ stamp/postmark.
NOTE - If you choose to make your own postcard(s)
- Be sure it is an appropriate size and weight! If not, the U.S. post office will not deliver.
- The post office will not accept 3x5 cards. Minimum size is 3 ½ x 5 inches.
- The maximum size I can carry is 4 ½ inches by 6 inches – that would require additional postage.
LET'S SEE HOW MANY POSTCARDS WE CAN GET!
Thank you - Alex
