Last Antarctica R. A. W. challenge

I’ve got some good news and some sad news. Let’s start with the sad news – so we can end with the good news.

As I sit down to write this journal - I’m a little sad – because this is the last Antarctica R. A. W. challenge before my expedition.

And now for the good news… that means the expedition will start in about one month. WOW! The time is sure flying by!

I’ve saved the best challenge for last!

In case you are not familiar with the Antarctica R.A.W. challenge – check out this journal

Are you ready for the Last Antarctica R.A.W. challenge?

And the topics are… drum roll…

The selected animal is the SEAL – Anyone surprised with that choice?

For the second topic, we are going to change things up a bit. This month’s focus will be on history. Why you ask? December is the 100th anniversary of the race to the South Pole. So, in honor of that I’ve decided to highlight EXPLORERS – both Arctic and Antarctic.

Are you up for the challenge?

If so, here’s a reminder as to how this challenge works.

  • READ a book
  • Create an ART project or
  • WRITE about the selected ‘topic of the month’

A bit more information…

Seals – There are about 35 species of seals but only six live around Antarctica – they are:

  • Antarctic Fur Seal
  • Crabeater Seal
  • Leopard Seal
  • Ross Seal
  • Southern Elephant Seal
  • And of course…Weddell Seal

Choose any one of these seals – or if you wish – you can select a seal found in the Arctic region.

What can you find out about these fascinating creatures?

EXPLORERS – Get to know some of these famous explorers! Which ones explored both the Arctic and Antarctic regions?

  • Roland Amundsen
  • Robert F. Scott
  • Ernest Shackleton
  • James Weddell
  • James Clark Ross
  • James Cook
  • Louise Boyd
  • Matthew Henson
  • Henry Hudson
  • Robert Perry

Select one of these explorers – or choose another.

Point system for the Antarctic R.A.W. challenge

  • 5 points for each ART or WRITING project your complete
  • 5 points for each 20 pages you read (So, if you read a book that has 100 pages – You would get 25 points – Wow). If the book is under 20 pages you still get 5 points!
  • 10 points if you send me a picture of you (or your class) with your project. For example - send me a picture of you reading a book, or with your completed art project or maybe reciting an Antarctic poem to your family or your class.

As a reminder – if you are reading a large book that may take longer than one month to read. No Problem! In fact that is fantastic! Just send me the number of pages you finished during the month and your points count!

Remember, the more projects you do, the more points you'll receive!
