18 Junio 2010...Our first FULL day in Mexico!
The students and chapreones arrived at Olica with their host families. All of the students arrived by private vehicle. There are no big yellow school buses in Mexico City! Traffic is a problem...Miss Adriana, the ISSE Coordinator for Olinca Periferico told us that sometimes parents wait more than 30 minutes to drop off and pick up their children!
The first thing the Ohio delegation noticed about Olinca is the openess...once inside the gates, the school is very open. There are big open spaces for recess, outside lunch and open balconies with views of the mountains. Our students were also surprised by the differences in the way school is structured here compared to at home.
Much of the school day today was spent preparing for the HUGE Exhibition tomorrow. The fifth graders of Olina will be presenting to their parents a showing of all of their learnin gduring their primary years...it is sort of like a celebration of their elementary experience. WE have been watching them practice.
One of the groups has been studying Eating Disorders and Drug and Alcohol Addictions. They were given the task to work together to create an invention to help solve a problem related to this issue. Grant and Justin invented a¨"Robot to Help Mankind".
The students also participated in a debate regarding whether technology is a good thing or a bad thing. This was a topic on which everyone had an opinion!
The Graham ISSE delegation participated in a class debate over technology...good or bad? What do you think??
At the end of the day, the students left with their host families. It was a great first day of school, but, but I think the students are ready for the weekend!
