Journal Entry

Friday, October 21...I have 2 weekends left in Ohio before I make my voyage to the Arctic. The time is passing quickly and it will soon be time for me to leave. My classes have been busy getting ready. My freshman have been working on a density experiment that was the highlight of one of my journals last week. My Juniors and Seniors have been working on some amazing Arctic projects that I will share with you soon! Substitute lesson plans are completed and I have started the daunting task of packing! This weekend is going to be one to relax and enjoy autumn in the lower 48!

My boyfriend and I have been looking for a sailboat. We caught the bug when we went sailing in an AMF Puffer. Super cute little sailboat. Unfortunately, it had some bad cracks and leaked. It was not the boat for us! After about two months of looking and researching, we found a Catalina Capri 16.5. It was in Kansas....long story short...I spent the weekend going to pick up my new sailboat in Illinois!

Rend Lake is a 19,000 acre lake in Southern Illinois...it is where I learned to sail. Thank you Dave for our sailing lessons!

The Catalina 16.5 is MUCH different than the Healy, but there are some similarities. Both are water going vessels, so you use “boat language”. Forward means towards the front on any water going vessel and aft means towards the back. Port is the left side and starboard is the right side. Parts of the boat have the same name; keel, bow, stern, beam, hull, draft. The differences are HUGE (literally and figuratively). The Catalina 16.5 has a 2 horsepower engine while the Healy boats a 30,000 horsepower engine!! It takes more than a million gallons of diesel to fill the Healy but only about one gallon of gasoline to fill that Catalina Capri!

It was a great relaxing weekend on the water...and I am looking forward to my NEXT water adventure...it will be in the Arctic!!
