Mr. League, We are a group of 8th graders from Sacred Heart in Kingston, MA. Our question to you is this how did you get picked for this unusual experience ?

Michael League

Hi to Everyone at Sacred Heart! Thanks for the great question!
My story to getting chosen for this experience goes something like this...
Well, it wasn't that long ago that I was sitting in the same seats you
are now sitting in! I went to Sacred Heart and then went to college.
After college, I became a teacher and applied to PolarTREC, a program
linking teachers and researchers together.
Here's the cool part. I am using a lot of the skills and interests that
I developed while I was growing up. First, I have practiced a lot at
working with people, especially young people (being a teacher). Second,
I have participated in and studied science a lot, especially studying
nature (being a researcher). Finally, I have spent a lot of time being
out in nature (studying in the field). So, PolarTREC pulled all of that
together. Here at McMurdo, I am part teacher, part researcher, and part
field technician.
By the way, I am using a lot of skills that I never expected to use a
lot, like writing (a lot), reading (a ton), technology (web site,
computers, cameras), and SCUBA diving. All of the skills that I have
practiced over the years are coming in really handy here!
Thanks for following!
Mike
