I have been following many of the expeditions and have noticed that no one is currently in Antarctica. When you arrive this month, are there people there to greet you at McMurdo Station? How do you get there? Plane or ship? I know it is late winter and I have a vision of snow storms; what will you experience when you arrive? Have a safe trip. I am excited about following your expedition and research.

Lynn, Thanks for the great questions! You've definitely been doing some
studying on the PolarTREC web site! If you saw fellow PolarTREC teacher
Paula Dell's expedition, you know she arrived in Antarctica by ship.
Well, she went to Palmer Station on the Antarctic Peninsula, close to
South America. We will be traveling to McMurdo Station by plane from
New Zealand. The whole process takes several days, but it won't be long
for us now, so stay tuned to the journals. I'll be writing a lot about
the trip down to the ice.
When we arrive it will be the end of McMurdo Station's winter.
During the winter, there is a small group of workers who stay. The
conditions are very difficult: no sunlight, VERY cold temperatures, and
lots of blowing snow. These are the people who will greet us when we
arrive and help us settle in to life at McMurdo Station. When we
arrive, McMurdo will just begin to enjoy a little brighter situation as
daylight will be like a dusk and last a few hours in the middle of the day.
Keep reading those journals. Thanks for following!
Mike
