Ms Foletta,

I was surprised to read in your journal that there are no fish in Greyling Lake.  Do other lakes in Alaska have fish?  If so, can you explain why Greyling Lake does not have fish and others do?  Sorry I know this has nothing to do with your current research, but I'm curious.

Thanks!

Peggy Foletta

Thanks for the question! Greyling Lake is above the timber line and the input into the lake is the glacier and the output goes over several steep waterfalls, which would make it very difficult for fish to get up to. Also, the science team has spent many hours on the lake with a fish-finder sonar device and never found any. They were not looking for fish with the fish-finding device but for the buoy connected to the sediment traps and temperature loggers. The buoy is lowered 2 meters below the surface of the water so that when the lake water freezes in winter it will not trap and pop the buoy.
