Hi -
This is a really good question.  In fact, you are the second person to ask this question.  Stacy (the scientist I am working with) answered this question, so look for her answer.  
I do want to say that studying Antarctica will have an impact on the entire world.  There are people from many different countries that feel this way.  You should look at the Antarctica Treaty to see the names of the countries that have made a commitment to preserve Antarctica and support the research that is happening here.
