What type of clothing will you need to wear?

Stacy Kim

We need to wear LOTS of clothing. But no cotton, because cotton doesnot hold heat when it is wet, while wool and polypropylene do. We
wear lots of layers, because when we are working we start to sweat,
but when we are standing around we get cold, so we are constantly
taking off an putting on clothes. Our favorite item of clothing is
"Big Red" a giant goretex and down parka that is issued to each person
to keep them warm in Antarctic weather. It could almost double as a
sleeping bag!

I've already sent some of my own polypro long johns ahead, as well as some work clothes. The rest will go with me when I leave. And for the record, I am packing a ton of heavy wool socks. Some of those have gone on ahead as well.
The key in a place like Antarctica and other cold locations is to layer. You start with the lightest layers called base layers and work your way up to the outer layer or your jacket and insulated pants. If I have time, perhaps I can have someone take some video footage showing what it's like to get dressed to go out in the cold. (I wonder if I'll feel and look like the big, puffy Michelin man?? LOL! You'll have to let me know when you see pics of me and the rest of us!)
