In order to do your dives do you need to become a certified diver in ice diving?

Hi Jeremy,We need to be certified drysuit and scientific divers to dive in the
Antarctic. We have to meet minimum standards in experience and recent
diving, and pass a physical exam. Before we leave the US, I do a
check out dive with all my divers to be sure they are comfortable and
know how to use as much of the special Antarctic equipment as we have
to practice with. Then when we arrive at McMurdo, we are checked out
by the diving safety officer on station.
The diving there is amazing and worth all the effort. The water is so
clear during the spring that we can sometimes see 1000 ft. It is like
flying!
