Is there a lot of similairites between bears and polar bears? How long do you think the polar bears can swim before drownding? How does a polar bears coat change from a white to a creamish color? How many different species of penguins are there? Why can't you interact with penguins and polar bears? What is one of the funniest things you have seen a penguin do? What do polar bears eat?Besides fish.

Hi McKenzie!
You have a TON of great questions! I'll have you ask Ms. Galvan & her team your polar bear questions as polar bears are found up north in the Arctic and not in Antarctica. (I'm curious as to the answer to a few of them myself!)
Penguin species--there are 17 different species in Antarctic. The two that I'm likely to see are the Adelie & Emperor penguins, and I can't wait!!
Under the Antarctic Treaty, in which 44 countries agree to follow the "rules" or agreements--so to speak--no one is allowed to interfere or interact with any wildlife unless they have a permit to do so, ie scientists doing penguin research. If we do something that causes then to change their behavior in any way, then we are in the wrong. So, no touching, no petting...nada!! My hands will either be in my pockets or on my camera! But, they sure are cute!
Because i haven't been yet, perhaps Stacy has a funny penguin story. I'll give her a heads up!
Thanks for your questions, and be sure to get on Ms. Galvan's "Ask the Journal" section and ask those polar bear questions!

HI McKenzie,I'll leave the polar bear questions for someone who works in the
Arctic. There are no polar bears in the Antarctic. But there are
penguins, and one of the funniest things the Adelie penguins do is
steal rocks from each other to build their nests. There are only a
limited number of rocks, so the same rocks keep getting stolen back
and forth. It is almost like a game!
Best, Stacy
