Hey Bob,

Because the synactic foam on the tether does not compress at depth, will it ultimately replace the foam the currently protects SCINI "innards"? (Or would synactic foam make SCINI too boyant??) If I remember correctly from orientation weekend, that foam was guaranteed to hold up in depths of just over 1,000 feet but not deeper. Am enjoying reading your blogs!! "Hello" to all!

Hi Michele,The problem with syntactic is that it is heavy. Thus, the amount of
floatation that it provides per unit volume is not very great, though
it is non-compressible to great depths. It comes in different grades
that are good for different depths, but the deeper it is good for the
heavier it is. So, we would have to make the diameter of SCINI larger
in order to put enough syntactic foam on her to make her neutrally
buoyant. And as you know, the whole point is to keep her skinny!
Syntactic foam is also very expensive, so on our budget, we couldn't
afford it anyhow.
Best, Stacy for Bob
