Good afternoon,

I was shown a picture of the huge fish living under the ice in our presenation. What is the name of that fish? Is it related to any other fish? I found it facinating that the blood has properties that we could use for preserving human organs. What other possibilities are there?

Hi Amy!
The whitish colored fish is sometimes referred to as an Antarctic Cod; although, it really isn't a cod. You may also see it called the Antarctic Toothfish orĀ  Dissostichus mawsoni (scientific name). The smaller fish that was darker in color and being held is a Paraliparis devriesii. It is named after the scientist who discovered it--DeVries. I just read an article the other night about possibleĀ applications in creating frost resistant crops. I'd love that as our growing season is a tad short!
