Erika guessed that the flag was at half mast for Sir Edmund Hillary who died last week.

Very good Erika!!! Yes it was for Sir Hillary and yes he was from NZ. So here's another question.
Why would the flag be lowered for him Antarctica (and why would there have been a memorial service for him here at McMurdo)?

Hi Mr.BThis is a guss well Mount Everest is in Autarctica and Sir Hillary was the frist one to make it to the top.The 2nd question is tricky and to be honest I don't know sorry.

Hi Erika!!!Very good thought, but not quite. Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay were the first people to climb Mt. Everest, which, as you know, is one of the reasons he is famous. Mt. Everest though is on the border between the countries of Nepal and Tibet, not in Antarctica.
Here is another hint: Not only was he first to climb Everest he was also first at something here in Antarctica.
