Mr.K, you were talking about how the ship had a barometer aboard. What is the significance of that, (what's it job). And what would happen if it broke-down?

A barometer is a weather instrument that measures atmospheric pressure. The information it provides is useful in predicting the weather. If the trend is downward, a low front is approaching and stormy weather can be predicted. If the trend is upward, a high front is approaching and clear weather can be predicted.
