Hey Mr. Kasemodel,

I can tell from your posts that you are having a great time.  I fondly remember that feeling of not wanting to miss anything when I was a TREC teacher on the Healy with Lee and Jackie in May 2006.

 My questions for you:

1.  Can you post a map that shows where the ship is going and where it has been?

2.  Is Dr. Lovvorn expecting to see Spectacled Eiders and if so, where?  Also, has he had new developments in his research on Eiders lately?

Thanks and best wishes to you,

Samantha Dassler Barlow

I will post a map with my latest journal. I went out tonight with Dr. Lovvorn and we saw the first Spectacled Eiders of the trip. We were approximately 80 miles south of St Lawrence Island. We flew over a lead with 8000 eiders. It was pretty exciting. I got some video of them from the helicopter. He is just completed a bio-energetics study where he discovered that it takes more energy to swim on the surface than to dive foraging on the body. The eiders lose a lot of energy on the water relative to resting on the ice or diving.
