Hey Mr. Wood, it's Sarah B. from period 4, sorry i wasn't able to answer any other of your questions, but here are my answers: JOURNAL #1 ANSWER: the patterns of water tell me that the water freely moves around the ice when it is not frozen. The picture shows that the water was moving downhill. JOURNAL #2 ANSWER: I would expect the CO2 levels to go up due to all of the decomposers breathing out CO2. The time of day does play a big role because it determines whether or not there will be more CO2 or less CO2 in a certain area. I hope you have a great time, and I really like the pictures.

John Wood

Hello. Thanks for the answers. It's ok that you didn't have time before. Most of your answers look pretty good. We know the water is moving downhill but how fast do you think it's moving? The CO2 will go up mostly because the plants are all covered with snow, so it doesn't really matter what time of day it is.Keep up the good work,
Mr. Wood

I actually think the water is moving pretty fast to be making all of those patterns/lines in the ice and snow.-Sarah B. Period 4

John Wood

Thanks for the answers. You have some good thoughts. I'm glad you like the pictures.Mr. Wood

John Wood

Think of it this way. When water is running fast, it goes in a pretty straight line. But when it goes slow, it turns and runs around objects that it hits along the way. The river is turning so much because it is going very slow when the ice melts. This is because the ground in that area is flat!Does that help?

Yes! That helps a lot! I completely understand now. Thank you.-Sarah B. Period 4

I think you guys take measurements from smiley plots that aren't in the experiment because the data you collect from there could eventually end up in your final conclusion for your experiment if the data is close to all of the others. You could also be doing this just for a little more knowledge of whats happening in different areas. And i think that the dog of the week was a really good choice! Tamale's story is very funny of how she got into your fridge! i laughed soo hard! What's really neat is that she's blind and still doing very well.

John Wood

Very good thinking, thank you for a clear answer. Yes, we agree that Tamale is pretty special.Mr. Wood

I think the warmer winter ground temperatures on the experimental side will affect the plants growth in spring because i think it will be able to affect the air around it making it warmer. If the air and ground is warmer, it makes the permafrost thaw out, affecting the way the plants grow in the springtime. It must have felt really good to take a shower after 10 days! I also thought that the sculpture of the bear was really neat. Do they just carve it out of solid chunks of ice? I'm really glad you needed more snickers because I didn't think my small bag of snickers would last you very long.
I also have a couple of questions:
-have you seen any interesting animals or any animals at all?
-what do you think the average CO2 levels are right now?
-what do you wear to keep you so warm outside?
Have a great time!
-Sarah B. Period 4

John Wood

Thanks for the answers and the comments. The Snickers you gave me were great on the flight up here.I have still now seen any animals to talk about yet. I think they will be coming around soon if the temperatures stay up. The CO2 levels we are seeing here at times now are over 400 ppm. Sometimes under the snow they are over 1,000 ppm. This is very high, but remember it's only for a part of the year. On cold days we wear a lot of clothes. Last week I had on 5 layers while we were in the field. I am thinking about do a journal on what to wear in the cold. What do you think?
Thanks,
Mr. Wood

Wow five layers! That's a lot of clothes! And yeah, maybe doing a journal on what to wear on cold days would be a great idea. I've seen a lot of questions about that anyways so it sounds like a really good idea:) I think a lot of the students would appreciate that. Oh, and I'm glad you liked the snickers.-Sarah B. Period 4

Thank you very much! Good ideas, I will do it.Mr. Wood

Wow! I never really thought about what temperatures bubbles would freeze at. Come to think of it..... I never really thought bubbles could freeze! That experiment really got me thinking about what temperatures different items would freeze at. In conclusion, I thought that experiment was really cool.-Sarah B. Period 4

John Wood

I am glad you liked that experiment. Anything will freeze if you cool it down enough! Thanks,

So I was wondering, how do you usually get around to receive data from the smiley pots? And do you ever have problems finding or getting to the smiley plots?-Sarah B. Period 4

John Wood

We are still running around on the snowmobiles. So far we have not had any problems getting to the plots, but that could change as the snow changes. We had to stop and help someone else get their truck out of the snow. Thanks,

Awww Ninja is so cute! Nice pick Mr. Wood:) And nice little April Fool's joke. You got me! I actually believed you when you said you were bringing Ninja to Talbert! I got so excited!!! Then of course, I read the last sentence............ yeah, I'm not that excited anymore;)-Sarah B. Period 4

Oh, and thanks for answering my question.-Sarah B. Period 4

Glad you like Ninja. Sorry about the joke! Wait until you see the other dogs. Thanks,

Because of the short amount of daylight, the CO2 would be going out because there isn't much photosynthesis going on to take in any CO2.And I was really amazed that glaciers just carry huge rocks as they move, and then just plop them down into an area that has no similar rocks! I think that's really cool! Anyways, how was your little hike besides having to stop because of the cold winds? Were there certain areas that were really hard to get around because of big rocks or anything like that?
-Sarah B. Period 4
Oh, and I really hope you see some interesting animals soon. Have fun!

John Wood

You are right on about the CO2! Some of the rocks moved by the glaciers are very huge. Cool stuff. The hike was great but just too short and cold. We will find a better day to go up and I will get better pictures. I hope we see some animals soon also!!Thanks,

I'm really sorry but I'll be in the desert over spring break for a week and we have no connection there:( I'll have to read the journals you put up for those days when I get back from Johnson Valley desert. Sorry again. Is this okay? Will I be marked down for anything will I?

John Wood

You will be fine. You may miss out on the quiz,. Maybe you can do that before you leave. Don't worry about it!Thanks,
Mr. Wood

okay:) Just to clarify, I did do the first quiz but I did it with Danielle Johnson.-Sarah B. Period 4

Hi how are you doing today? Just commenting on the weather, but can it really reach 80 degrees there in Alaska? I would usually think it would be colder than 80 degrees.......but anything can really happen. Especially if there is a dramatic change in climate. Well, this is my last day to respond so good luck! And have fun with grading all of those quizes1:)-Sarah B. Period 4

John Wood

It can get into the 80's here on a normal year. Pretty crazy! Anyway, thanks for all of your great questions and comments. Enjoy your break and I will see you soon. Thanks,

Hi Mr. Wood! I'm back!:) Sorry for missing so many days of your journals, I was in the desert and i couldn't really connect to the internet there. But anyways, here are my answers:APRIL 4, 2012 WHY IS THERE NO TUNDRA IN HUNTINGTON BEACH?:
I think that Huntington Beach has no tundras because HB has a lot of trees and it doesn't snow here at all.
APRIL 14, 2012 CAN SCIENTISTS STUDY SOMETHING IN NATURE WITHOUT CHANGING IT?:
I think scientists can study something in nature without changing it. It's just like you in Alaska, you are studying something in nature without disturbing the area around it.......or at least trying not to disturb the area around it:)
I also thought all of those sled dogs were really cool! And, how can you stand go in an outhouse all the time!? I would die!!
