Jimmy Ly Period 4 Hi. I think that the circles form by creatures under the ice. It tells me that the water is very active and that it must change directing to weather something else every once in a while. It also tells me that the slope of the land changes very often from one way to another. I see five oxbow lakes. I think that the adaptions are the nose not being moist and how the fur is put down do insulate itself.

John Wood

Good thinking. The ice is round by the pieces hitting at each other as they move in the water. Like a rock that is rounded by rolling in a river. The river in the picture is moving very slow because the land is flat, so the water just goes where ever it can find a low point. Keep up the good work.Mr. Wood

Hi. I think that the CO2 would be rising because it is slowly getting warmer causing the permafrost to melt just a bit more releasing the carbon.
We would see it go up as a gas is released from the tundra source.
Yes because depending on sunlight causing more heat could affect the releases of carbon and the rate that the permafrost is melting.

John Wood

Good thinking. The CO2 is going up in the tundra, but it going up more in areas where the snow cover is deeper. This is due to the insulation from the snow keeping the ground from getting cold. The sunlight has little to do with CO2 this time of year because of the cold and mostly because the plants are buried and blocked from the sun.Mr. Wood

I think that boiling water turns to snow at 16 degrees F.
I think that this happens because it was going to turn to ice but stopped half-way and turned to snow which is between the ice and the water.

John Wood

Good thinking! Did you see the video with the boiling water? Let me know how it looks. Thanks,
Mr. Wood

I think that the parts per million looks like one part out of a million parts of something.
Also, the video for some reason keeps saying that the video that I have requested is not available. I will let you know when I can see the video and how it is.

Hi. I had to download the video to my computer to watch it but it look very nice. Just a question but did you have any neighbors around your house or did you at least have to go a mile to see someone or get something?

John Wood

There are a couple of neighbors in the area. The people that own this cabin and rent it to us live in a cabin that is attached to ours, but we don't see them that often. It's a pretty remote place. Thanks,
Mr. Wood

Hi. I was wondering how far you would have to go to get to one or those restroom places or do you have a private one in your cabin?

John Wood

The outhouse is a short walk from the cabin. We do not have plumbing in the cabin so all of our business is done outside! It get cold at timesThanks,
Mr. Wood

I think that it is called the winter warming side because the snow piles up on that side causing insulation. The insulation will warm the ground and melt permafrost.
We should worry because it could cause change in atmosphere over time and global warming.

These plots and results of these plots can be put together with the regular experiment. These plots can change the experiment so they are important as variables.

John Wood

You are right. We should be concerned about it, but we should study it more and make sure we understand what is really going on.Thanks,
Mr. Wood

John Wood

You are right, the results can be put together with the data and compared. However, these plots represent and kind on control area for the experiment for that comparison. Does that make sense?Mr. Wood

I think that the ground temperatures can affect the plants in the spring in a few ways. First, I think that it can affect the carbon in the atmosphere above it so the plants can take in more carbon. The warmer it is, the easier it is for the permafrost to melt putting carbon into the atmosphere affecting the plants in spring.
Okay, never mind about the few ways because this is only way that I can think of and forget about the first part to.

John Wood

Great comments! I think you have it. Wait until you see the difference in the plants later on.Thanks,
Mr. Wood

Hi. I am about to go to sleep but I have a question. Why do you post the journals so late at night?
Also, can you post them earlier because this is starting to affect my sleep time?

John Wood

You can read them in the morning! They will still be there. You need your sleep.Good night,
Mr. Wood

Hi. why were those five dogs not able to go?

Hi. An error happened on both of my question so I'm going to repost both of them.

Period 4
Hi. why were those five dogs not able to go?

John Wood

They are either too old, too blind, or injured at this point. But they're doing fine. Thanks,
Mr. Wood

Mr. Wood, do you play any sports up in Alaska?

John Wood

We don't really have time to play sports up here ourselves. I try and get a run in whenever I can but that's about it.Thanks,
Mr. Wood

How cold do you think that it would be to have bubbles freeze in the air?

John Wood

I think that the bubbles would freeze pretty quickly at maybe -20 to -25 F. Maybe we will get another cold spell here and can test that out. Did you see the video? Thanks,
Mr. Wood

Hi. I kept trying to watch the video and it said that it was private so I couldn't watch it without permission.

Hi. I pushed the button again and I figured out that it was the enter button so I will try to avoid pushing it.
Anyways, did you do anything to anyone on April Fools Day?

John Wood

Glad you figured that out. I didn't do anything big to anyone. Did you see the Dog of the Week for Ninja? Thanks,
Mr. Wood

Jimmy LyPeriod 4
HI. I did see Ninja. She did look cute.
I think the Co2 is going out because there are still decomposers producing carbon dioxide while plants are not taking it in.

Do you think that getting the coal out is hard?

John Wood

Did you see the little animation from the coalmine link? It looks like getting coal is not too hard, but a lot of work! Thanks,
Mr. Wood

No I didn't see the animation.
QUIZ #1
1. The building is the Museum of the North.
2. The official name of the mountain is Mt. McKinley.
3. You are measuring the snow depth.
4. Ninja is three years old.
5. The name of the instrument is the smiley plot.
6. The refrigerator is taped shut because Tamale keeps going into it and messing up the food.
7. You are getting ready to land at Fairbanks.
8. It measures respiration. I know because it is basically measuring carbon in the atmosphere like the other graph on March 30. I also know because the carbon is slowly going up and so is the graph.
9. The dogs are Tamale and Butch.
10. Mr. Wood's favorite store is Fred Meyer.
11. Oxbow lakes have been formed.
12. The race is Yukon Quest.
13. The instrument is the HOBO station. The station measures Co2 and monitors weather year round.
14. The thermokarst is the feature near the lake.
15. The leeward side is on the left.
16. Tommy had appeared once.

Jimmy LyI just need to add something to number 13. it also measures wind speed in meters per second and direction.
It also measures Photosynthetical Active Radiation.

John Wood

Good job on the quiz. I will let you know how it comes out. Thanks,
Mr. Wood

Jimmy LyPeriod 4
Mr. Wood, when will you come back to school and announce the winner for the quiz?

John Wood

As I mentioned in the instructions, I will try and tell you who won at the PolarConnect on the 16th. You'll see. Thanks,
Mr. Wood

Jimmy LyPeriod 4
Well, I guess that we can wait but are you having fun over there?

John Wood

Yes, you will have to wait! Everything is good here. Today it just got warmer and was very nice working in the field. There is water beginning to move everywhere during the day now. Thanks,
Mr. Wood

Hi. I think that there is no tundra in Huntington Beach because it is close to the equator and it is too warm. (Actually, there is a tundra: Toyota Tundra! HaHaHa)

John Wood

Funny guy! No permafrost, no tundra. Thanks,
Mr. Wood

John Wood

Neither do I! But that is a large animal. Thanks,

Hi Mr. Wood. How did you make the mistake and drive off the trail? Was it a long walk back to get the Jeep?

John Wood

It happens sometimes, even when you're careful. It was about half a mile back to the jeep. Thanks,
Mr. Wood

Hi. I think that an aurora is the lights that you see when particles come from the sun and come into Earth's magnetic field some how creating lights.

John Wood

You are correct. It's really cool! Thanks,
Mr. Wood

What do you mean when you say that you will talk to us tomorrow?

John Wood

And that is one of the largest challenges in science. How can we be sure it's not us that is causing the change and not some natural cycle? Thanks,
Mr. Wood
