what is unique about antarctica

Sarah Diers

Whew, where to begin with Antarctica's uniqueness- there are way too many things down here that are specific to the great Southern Continent. So, I think I will go with the answer that popped into my head first- Antarctica is the only continent (out of seven) that is not claimed or governed by any one country. Rather, Antarctica is governed through a treaty that involves over 46 countries. The fourteen Articles of the Treaty are amazing and include such things as "Antarctica is for peaceful purposes only (Article 1)," and there is "freedom for scientific investigations to continue (Article 2)." It is incredible to me that the countries of our world found it necessary and worthwhile to save an entire continent for scientific research and make the sharing of scientific information an integral part of the Treaty. Where else do you see countries agreeing to peacefully share in resources and information?!I like this question and I do believe that I will continue to think up more unique aspects of Antarctica while I am down here. Keep reading the journal for more!Keep cool, Sarah
