Merry Christmas from chilly North Carolina to Warm Antarctica?

This has been the first white Christmas here in NC that I can remember, although the rain today is melting the snow that came last week. As I have been reading your journals here by my fire, I have been surprised to learn it has been warmer in McMurdo than it has been here in central NC.

Although far from home, I hope this finds you well and surrounded by new friends this holiday season... it sounds like you are getting a good experience all around town...

Happy Holidays to you, Tim!
I, too, find it quite surprising that the weather is so wonderful down here. I came prepared for bone-chilling cold, and am met with temperatures that equal that which I experience at home on Whidbey Island during an average winter. However, you must remember that this is Antarctica's summer- the weather changes dramatically when winter comes blowing in! The winter months of 24 hours of darkness, very high, very cold winds, and temperatures well into the negatives is what I expected here year round. I am very glad to enjoy the "balmy" summer months, instead.
McMurdo is taking a little break from the holiday celebrations to spend a few days working- gotta keep this town running, but we are having a huge music fest on the 2nd of January called IceStock. Look for a posting on that shortly after the festivities die down.
