What do you think the silence will be like? I personally think it would be freaky!

Sarah Diers

What a wonderful question! I do think that near absolute silence may freak me out a bit, but I am really looking forward to experiencing it. I like the quiet. At home I often spend hours reading with no background music or other intentional noises to bother me, but there is always the ticking of the clock, the patter of my dog's feet on the floor, the hum of the fridge, some of which annoy me while I read. I am excited to discover complete silence- maybe after a while it will annoy me as much as the noise of my daily life does!

This is a question that will have to wait for an answer. I am really hoping to get out to an Emperor Penguin colony. Keep your fingers crossed that I do and keep checking my journal for penguin updates!Keep cool, Sarah

What do you eat?
McCourt's class

Sarah Diers

Hello again Ms. McCourts class,
I love the questions- keep them coming!
What I get to eat really depends on where I am.
At McMurdo there is a galley that makes amazing meals. Omelets and pancakes for breakfast, delicious hot lunches, dinners with international flair. There is even a midnight meal for those on who work nights. On top of yummy meals there are incredible desserts- cookies, cinnamon rolls, an ice cream machine! I really have to make sure I don't let my eyes control my tummy or I would come home weighing a lot more than when I left! This year they have increased the budget for fresh veggies and fruit, too, so we have wonderful salads and great fruit, some exotics that we do not even get in the States too often.
At Happy Camper we had trail mix, lots of chocolate, and freeze-dried backpacking meals. Not the most gourmet, but still pretty tasty.
Out at our field site at Lake Fryxell, the DOM team is in charge of cooking our own meals. We a "shopping" for food for the field site tomorrow. Most of our food at camp is frozen, or packaged- fresh food will not make it out to us too often.
Thanks again for the awesome questions! I cannot wait to visit your class when I return to Whidbey.
 Keep cool, Sarah
