Giavanna- Great question as I learned a lot about ice and how it is formed. First a thin sheet of ice is formed. As the wind and waves go over the the thin ice, it breaks into pieces. The pieces rub against each other and the round shape of the pancakes are formed. The lower the temperature, the more the ice forms and the pancakes get bigger. The process continues with the breaking and rubbing until perhaps a wind blows them up against each and they begin to freeze together. Dr. Rolf Gradinger says, "The ice needs to grow up, just like children." - Ms. Wheeler
