if the underground walkway was not made out of metal what would happen?

Another great question! The walkway kept us from walking directly on the ground which is covered in "dust", a very fine sediment, that has fallen from the walls and ceiling. The sediment would cloud up the tunnel and also cover areas such as the ice wedges.
