Dear Mr.Wood.

How are you doing and have you reached Antarctica yet? Today I have three questions. (1) WHen the volcano errupts can it send out plain and clean crystals or does the crystals have to be surrounded in basalt ans other molten materials? (2) How long and how far will it take you to place each seismicgraph around Mt. Erebus? (3) When you are at the end of your expidition will you have to pick up all the seismicgraphs that you placed up, if so how long would it take you and if not who picks it up afterward? Hope you don't freeze to death! Have a nice trip! Smile

Cynthia,Good to hear from you.  I just flew into Anatarctica today.  It is about 12 degrees above freezing and the wind is blowing a little.  But I am very happy to be here!  For your questions, the crystals can grow all by themselves at times, during the cooling process.  If the weather stays good we can get the seismometers out in about two weeks.  That would be very good.  And yes, at the end of the experiment we will need to pick up all of the stations and anything else that we have placed out this season.  That will also take some time.  I will try not to freeze to death, but I can't promise anything!
Cheers,
Mr. Wood
