Erebus Volcano Antarctica

Hi

I have not written to you because i don't have time. Now it is winter break, so i can.

Have you been able to cat-scan the volcano yet? If you have, what are the results?

Do you do any experiments, like pouring somthing into a tube and have it expolde?

Thanks for writing.  The best thing for you to do now that you have more time is to read the journal entries and some of the other questions and comments from others.  That should help you understand what has happened so far.  Then I'm sure that you will have some focused questions for me.

Thanks for the tip.
Do any animals live in the caves? Is it possible for the cave to crash in? Is the crater step the size of an actual step? Is there a time where Mt. Erebus is not spitting something out?

Happy New Year Rachel,
If you can imagine, there are no animals, plants, insects, or just about anything else that lives on Mt. Erebus.   We do have to be very careful when entering and being in the caves.  They can fall in, or even a large piece of ice could fall and hit someone.  It's hard to tell from the photo, but the step in the crater is about 400 feet deep and 200 feet across.  It really is a large ledge.  Most of the time Mt. Erebus is not spitting anything out of the crater.  That makes it easier to go up on the rim and study it.  And, yes thank you for asking.  I will get a picture of Tommy in a cave if I can. Although I don't like putting him in danger that much!

If something piece of ice falls in the cave, about how big would the ice be?
How many caves are there in Antarctica? How long are they, about?

Hello Rachel,
There are many different caves around the Antarctic.  We have only been in a few of them.  Usually the ice that falls is not too large.  The caves kind of sink in slowly most of the time.  Some of the caves are several hundred feet long!

I did not get a chance to see any penguins this season!  Besides, not all of them live in the antarctic.
