Should we be concerned about the melting speed of the glacier compared to the melting speed in the past?

Michael Lampert

yes, as the glacier recedes it is cause for concern. In a stable climate we would still expect recession of glaciers for different local reasons. However, this is a world wide phenomenon, the importance of glaciers is that they are reservoirs of fresh water...much is used as drinking water and agriculture water... and because glaciers sit on land, the worst case is that they all melt and the coast cities will be flooded as sea level rises to the belly button of the statue of liberty (i need to double check that calculation)
