How is the gacier formed? How big is the glacier? Do you like the weather over there?

Does the glacier maintain a relative position or does it move everywhere? How quicly does the glacier move?Megan and Jordan

What is the mass and volume of the glacier?Jackie, Ellen, and Kenji

Dear Mr. Lampert,
How far into the glacier have you been hiking/digging to find accurate temperatures?
Miss you!!!
Please come back!!!!
Aleha & Paige :)

Michael Lampert

the glacier is formed from snow compressing into ice. it is several miles long and a quarter mile wide. we had sun!

Michael Lampert

the glacier moves about 10 cm a year.. it is maintaining its position over the last ten years but is receding slightly now.

FYI a chick hatched today !!What specifically are you researching and who takes over when you come back??

Anonymous

our first chick was born today!!!We named him Harry Potter b/c after you left the eggs were unlugged again and we didn't expect any of them to survive. Now our question: Are you staying by yourself? In the wilderness? Where are you staying? Sleeping?Grace & Armando

Michael Lampert

awesome! the chicks should be all coming this week, make sure to get them in an incubator. the researchers here trade time slots, these guys are looking at seismicity and others are looking at microbes in the ice... NVE is trying to get more research here.

Mr. Lampert!
One of the chicks hatched! we named it Harry Potter, because it's the Chick Who Lived. If another one hatches, we'll name it Ron Weasley, so he's got a friend. So far we don't allow Morgan or Armando near the chick, because they're dangerous weirdos. So, how are you? Why do glaciers move? Contemplate these two questions and let us know.
Love,
Maggie and Ida
(and Harry Potter, the Chick Who Lived)

Michael Lampert

there is a cabin that houses eight in the tunnel.only eight are allowed in the cabin at a time.

Michael Lampert

well the short answer is that glaciers move to get away from morgan and armando.but really all glaciers move because of gravity. that is the definition of a glacier, downhill ice flow.

Mr. Lampert,Do we have an extra bulb for the SmartBoard? If so, where would it be? We need to find it! Haha thank you!

ok, extra credit, you figure it out... say 10 km by 600 m by 400 m of ice... density near water....1 gram is one ml of water....

Does altitude have an effect on the temperature and/or the movement of the glacier?
5/5
Is there a certain melting point of the glacier?
(We won't be here on Thursday because of AP Lit, so this is our question for that day)
Hope you're doing great!
Kenji, Ellen, Jackie

Michael Lampert

yes, the variation in temperature in the glacier does effect its movement, it has different viscous properties with pressure and temperature.
