Hi

Like everyone else, tom and I are anxious to hear about your first impressions although I can imagine you've been very busy getting setup. I'm particularly curious about your living arrangements and how you are coping with the cold. Nancy Felling

Mary Anne Pell…

Hello Nancy and Tom,
I’m glad to know you are both well.  The cold has not been anything like I anticipated.  The temperatures in the day are between 30-50 degrees F.  When there is wind off the sea ice, then it’s cold.  But with the coats, gloves and socks we have, we are staying warm.  And the little hunting cabin, where we collaborate, share meals and record data is well insulated.

There is a second empty cabin with beds, but it was left with seal or walrus blubber which had gone bad, so it is not used.  When there is free time it will be burned, or dumped in the ocean.  The four season tents protect against the wind, and the polar sleeping bag has kept me toasty.  So, it’s not too bad.

I suspect you both would greatly enjoy it here, with your interest in foreign places and backpacking. Enjoy your summer, and keep warm.

Love,
Mary Anne
