Greetings from the Beaufort Sea. I can appreciate your observations about the lack of visual clues in the landscape. The same is true for me at sea. Nothing but water, water everywhere.
I am wondering what the term "ablation" refers to in studying glaciers. What is doing the ablating? 5K = 3.2 miles. I know this because I have been running on the treadmills in the gym here and at first I was so impressed with how fast I was running, 7.5 minute miles???? until I realized that the treadmill was measuring in kms!

HI Gerty,
I hope the seas are not too high! Last year when I was out a sea for a month with nothing but water to look at, I started noticing all the cool things about the water like the various colors and the way it flows around different parts of the vessel.
You guys are doing some great science! Great video clips! Are they going to analyze any of the data while onboard? Are you going to assist in any of the science?
Treadmills are SOOO boring... good for you that you're taking advantage of it.
Ablation refers to the loss of snow and ice on the glacier. A synonym for the word is wastage which makes a little more sense. I will be doing a glacier journal entry in the near future to spell out terms and describe the land features, etc..
