Heidi,

I believe the dark band in the second ice core was a layer of ocean rock and sediment. It's really cool to follow your expedition and I love to read your journals. They're very interesting, and I'm learning a lot about the WAIS and ice core drilling.

Sincerely, Sarah Mix

Sarah, Great guess! Since we are so far above bedrock, which is at 3,400 meters depth, we think the dark layer is volcanic ash. There are several volcanoes in Antarctica, which are likely the source of this ash. We have collected about 6 of these dark bands at different depths! It will be really exciting to see what we can learn from the samples when we get the ice back to the lab!
You have great questions and thanks for following along! It is nice to know you are following this adventure!
Cheers,
Heidi
