ElliottThere aren't any polar bears in the Kuril Islands.  Polar Bears live on sea pack ice and eat seals.  There isn't any ice on the water during the summer time in the Kurils area, so that polar bears are far away to the north.  On the southernmost two islands, Kunashir and Iturup, there ARE black bears and on the northernmost island, Paramushir, there are brown bears.  Last year I saw both kinds on those islands.  This year we will be in the Central Kurils so we won't have to worry about bears at least!
