Hello Nicole!Although I'm not yet packing, I certainly am starting my "do not forget...." list!
We do not take food to the ice with the team - we can't take food through New Zealand; at least not in the regular packing/luggage system.
But, McMurdo station has a food storage area that is LOADED with different types of food. So, when we get to McMurdo, we make a food packing list, then go to the storage area and gather it all. Then we pack it into boxes which get taken to the helicopter hanger. We have to pack carefully because some things can get frozen and some can't. Anything that we do not want to freeze, we have to label DNF (DNF= Do not freeze) and those items then fly inside the helicopter. Everything else gets flown in a "sling load" which is a large cargo net full of supplies that hangs below the helicopter as it travels.
If we need more food while we are in the filed, we send an order in to the food storage managers via email and they pack up the boxes for us. It's kind of funny having a helicopter land at your tent to drop off food!
It's an amazing effort to keep the research going!
Cheers,
Robin
