on the USCGC Healy for the next few weeks? If so, when do you expect to begin your new journal entries? Will we be able to follow the expedition from this web site or will there be another that we should look for?

Also, when will the Healy and the CCGS Louis St. Laurent begin their joint exercise? As I understand it, when the combined effort begins, most of the science will be done from the St. Laurent instead of the Healy. Could you please tell us why this would be.

I read about the three Canadian ships that became stuck in the ice north of Barrow, Alaska, a couple of days ago. Does this mean that the science team should have enough ice for their studies?

Thanks

Mike,
I will be (sadly) leaving the Louis at the end of this science cruise on21 August 2008. The Louis will be conducting a seismic survey inconjunction with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea beginning 21August 2008. The US Coast Guard Cutter Healy will be providing icebreaking assistance for the Louis for 4 of the 6 weeks of the program. This is a joint mission. Each ship is outfitted differently so the workis divided up to best use each ship's equipment. When the Louis is towingseismic gear, its maximum speed is 4 knots and the ship is limited to thethickness ice that it can go though in order to maintain the integrity ofthe equipment. On another portion of the trip, the Louis will offerassistance to the Healy as it uses its equipment. More information on thisprogram can be found at:http//geo.international.gc.ca/cip-pic/geo/continental_shelf-en.asp
Thank you for following along,
Gerty
