Dear Ms. Kaden, You are a fellow Texan! We wanted to wish you a great trip. We know you will have fun, and Mrs. lollie says that Mr. Miller is lots of fun, and very smart too. You will make a good team.Stay warm, Redd School 5th grade Houston, Texas

If you are interested in  Oden photos check out my webpage and click on the Oden link on the right site. Icebreakers are strong and heavy ships. However, they can get stuck too. Navigation skills are a must to follow leads (openings in the ice) etc. Best wishes,
Ute

Hi Ute and Students in Houston!Wow, what great connections you are all making in just a few days! Maybe when Ute gets back from the Oden - she can introduce you all to Dr. Stephen Ackley, an Antarctica researcher that works in San Antonio. Ute will be helping the reseachers on the Oden and doing some observations for Dr. Ackley (even though he won't be on the ship).
Thanks for posting!

Mrs. kaden Hello, as your son and a medical student, I was interested in what kind of medical care is needed or provided to these penguins.  I mean since they closer to human population are there dedicated veterinarians to take care of them.  Also, how are medical issues handled on the Oden, even the minor ones.  Well, take care and enjoy your trip.

Good question- During my visits here in Punta Arenas I have not seen a lot of medical care for penguins. I believe that penguins do not carry the bird flu yet and that things are going their natural way if humans do not create an oil spill or so. The people here in Chile told me that they have to wait to see a doctor if major surgery is needed but most die before they have seen one.
On the Oden we will have a physician . I will talk to her ( yes, it is a woman) to find out more. Today came  two big cruise ships to the port. They all have medical personal onboard. Nice job -cruise ship doctor.

Hi Ute, Sounds like your visit is going nicely.  Hongjie and Burcu should be arriving shortly if not there already.
One of the people on the trip is Dr. Pam Yochem.  She is a veternarian and has worked with Antarctic mammals (seals) and penguins on many trips.  She is also with the Hubbs Sea World Research Institute and helps take care of these animals at the Sea World parks, including the one here in San Antonio Texas.  I think she would be happy to answer the questions about what type of diseases and care that penguins need.

Alex Martinez

Hi Mrs. Kaden, this is Alex from your fourth period class. I was wondering if you knew any background information on the name of the Oden or why it was named as it was. Also, what have you learned thus far from your colleagues on the trip? I hope you're having a great time :-D                                                                                         -Alex M.
