Justin,
I think you are right.  It is hard to imagine being away from our families, especially at holidays.  However, in all of our lives we are constantly learning that we can be independent.  When kids come to Camp Talooli where I work in the summer, one of the most important things that they learn is that they have the strength be away from home and have a great time.  While the campers are away, they miss their families but they learn that they can still love someone who you don’t see every day.  Certainly, 18 year olds who go off to college learn that they can’t grow as much unless they also learn to live on there’re own.
It is the same for me.  I will learn so much in Antarctica that it is worth the cost of being away from home.  My family and I will grow stronger as we practice long-distance love.
Many of life’s most important lessons require pain and sacrifice.
Take care,
Jeff Peneston
