Jeff, I was wondering if you and Marja have worked together on any projects.I know she is posting her own journals, but have you been able to spend time picking each other's brains about the voyage, school, etc? How about a picture of you together to share with students? When are you scheduled to arrive in McMurdo? Lollie

Lollie,
First, I am sorry it has taken me a few days to respond but we are having a slow response to email on the ship.
Marja and I have had many pleasant discussions and she did a great presentation for everyone on board about her role in providing in-service training to teachers across Sweden.  Her agency provides inquiry based lesson plans, materials and teacher training to schools across the country.  I have suggested a variety of ways that we could collaborate including a webinar timed for a Sweden but the reality is that we serve rather different audiences.  She is also limited by the fact that she was not invited to come along until the last minute and was unable to create an audience base before departing.  It reminds me of how fortunate we have been to have the ARCUS/PolarTREC machine behind us. At your suggestion, I took a photo of the two of us holding up the flags of the day and it is in my Jan 4 journal.
Last evening we completed our 500-mile crossing of the Ross Sea Polynya and entered the sea ice at Ross Island.  The sky was clear and the sun was right behind Mt. Terror and Mt. Erebus.  It was spectacular!  This morning we are passing infront of the huge Adelie penguin colony at Cape Bird and we are entering McMurdo Sound.  I just say my first Orca in one of the leads.  I will helo off to McMurdo on the 12th and fly to Christchurch on the 13th, back home on the 16th and in the classroom on the 20th.
I wish you were here!
Take care,
Jeff
