Eric,
You ask a simple but big question.
Most of the people I meet seem to be uncomfortable (afraid) of trying anything new unless they can do it with a few friends.  This is natural because people like to rely on their friends (and family).  When I was growing up I went camping and I practiced being in unfamiliar places, far away from home.  Today I am excited to be getting ready to join a group of strangers aboard a Swedish icebreaker and head off to the far end of the Earth for 2 months.  I have learned to have faith in others and faith that I can adapt to new situations.
However...... while I am not nervous about the trip to Antarctica ( I trust the caption and the great ship Oden), I am a little unsure about being away from my family for 2 months.  I have never been away from my wife and children for more than two weeks!  But, they have faith in me and they have told me I will be fine.  We will see.    How do you think you would feel about being away from your family for 2 months?
take care,
Jeff
