This Question is for Nell. What is the boat like and can you describe where you eat and sleep? Also, what are the sea conditions like?

Hi Howard,I posted a journal about the Laurence M. Gould today with some pictures. Check it out! We eat in a mess hall area on level 01 of the ship. I sleep below decks (one floor below level 01) in the cargo hold. There are 2 berthing vans down there; one for men and one for women. Each berthing van holds 4 people. There are about 44 people on board all together; some are scientists, some are Raytheon employees who will work at Palmer Station, some are cooks and custodians. Everyone is friendly. The ship has 2 stories and a bridge (above level 02) where the captain and first mate spend a lot of their time.
The sea conditions have been fine so far. We're in the Drake Passage now, so the waves are bigger out here. We just passed through a hail storm with thunder and lightning!
Keep in touch!

Thanks for giving me a visual of the ship. All is well back here in PA. I had an 8th grade group out cross-country skiing Tuesday 2/14. We go again tomorrow but will be hiking since the forecast is 48 and rain. I plan to get some 6th graders on the site and to ask you questions soon. Looks like communicating is quite a large part of your work. Hope you are out doing field work soon.Howard

Hi Howard,I'm glad all is well. I understand you have a 2-hour delay today, so maybe you got some snow? Hopefully you'll be able to have a couple more cross country skiing adventures. Maybe we can take the Polar Ambassadors next year; I plan to continue with them even after my expedition.
I'll look forward to hearing from you and some students from PFMS!
