Hi Ms. Herrmann! I am reading so many of my students' (past and present) notes to you that I cannot resist sending the warmest of "Hellos!" The photos are gorgeous, and I can only imagine that being there live and in person is even more phenomenal. Hugs to you! It is so fascinating to read about all that you are learning. The voyage is over... now what's next? I can't wait to read and discover along with you. Hugs, Ms. Evans

HI there! Thanks for the note! I'm glad you are following along. The voyage on ship is over, but the next part of the voyage begins tomorrow! Dr. Amsler and his team will finish setting up their lab space tomorrow and will go out diving soon. (It's weather dependent.) I need to take a "Boating Two" course to be trained as a dive tender and will go out with them on the zodiacs when they collect samples. I'll also be helping in the lab in any way I can. I should have the opportunity to follow some other scientists as well. This afternoon I climbed the glacier behind Palmer Station with 2 other folks (Janice and Emily) and that was amazing. We heard the glacier calving several times; it sounded like a cannon being fired.
Hope you are well in State College! Thanks for writing!

All is well in SC! It is THON weekend, and town is a buzz with many colorful, charitable folks.I know it is a long-shot... but is there a way you can publish an audio file of a calving glacier? It sounds like it is some kind of massive explosion that you can probably feel physically too?
So cool to see the two green plants!
All the best to you!

Hi there!I never really know when it's going to happen so aside from me sitting
outside and waiting for it, I'm not sure I have much chance of catching
it on audio or video. If I catch it, I will certainly post it! It
really is amazing.
Glad to hear all is well at home! :)

The photos of you in the "man overboard" drill are fantastic! I can't believe how exhilarating that must have been! When the calving occurs, does it feel like an earthquake tremor, or is it just sound?
I showed Joyce your journals and photos this morning during study hall. She loves the penguin picture!
Happy Day to you!

Hi!The man overboard drill was pretty exciting. I figure I will probably never have another chance to jump into the Southern Ocean again, so I volunteered to play the victim! I haven't felt anything when the glacier calves, it's just been a sound. Glad you showed Joyce the journals- please tell her I said hello!
