Hi Nell,

Today's (3/1) journal was great - I love seeing all the different equipment. Do the Niskin bottles ever bring up creatures, too or is the opening too small for fish/krill to fit? How much water do the bottles hold? What kinds of differences are there in the water from different depths? (besides temperature and salinity).

We're looking forward to your webinar this afternoon. Jane will help me set up before 2pm.

Hi Tami,Yes, the Niskin bottles sometimes bring up krill and bits of seaweed.
The bottles hold 5 liters. Water samples from different depths have
bio-optical differences which give scientists information about the
concentrations of microbes and phytoplankton. There is typically more
"stuff" higher in the water column (in the euphotic zone).
Thanks for tuning in for the webinar. I thought it was a lot of fun! :)
