A recent publication of the journal Nature talks about the survivability of penguins with tags. After reading your post describing some penguins running from one with an tag, I was wondering if you had any thoughts on that?

Juan Botella

Hi there, thanks for writing about the impact of penguin tags on their survival
chances. I am not a biologist and have not worked with penguins, so what I
say here should be taken with a pound of salt.
I remember hearing on public radio about that study before I came on the
expedition. They interview a couple of people that work with penguins who
said the study was limited as it looked at one particular type of penguin
tags. The researcher countered that other type of tags not mentioned in
Nature were safer. I believe we should research the effects of all type of
tags to make sure we are not harming penguin populations.
Thanks for sending the link to the Nature paper. I will take a look at it
when we have internet access. You might wonder how am I posting all the
blogs and information if I claim not to have internet access. we do not
have 'live' internet, but the ship sends and receives mail every four hours
or so. I send my documents to people in Alaska who then load them up on the
internet. I take this moment to thank Ronnie back in Fairbanks for his help
on keeping the journal going.
Thanks again for writing,
Juan.

I've been checking your blogs here and there, and it sounds like you're a busy guy! We're looking forward to your assembly next week! We'll talk soon. Take care.Christy

Hi Christy, thanks for writing. I am keeping busy, no doubt. Too many projects I
want to do around here! I guess I should start preparing for next week's
assembly. I got woken up by a fire alarm today... day might go slower than
I wanted.
Thanks again fro writing.
Juan.
