Sarah, I just finished reading your last journal entry and was moved by the sincerity of your thoughts. Yours has truly been an adventure, and we have followed it with awe, surprise, concern, and admiration for the spirit of the entire crew and scientific team! You've done a great job sharing not only the science, but the human factor involved in exploration. Hope to see you in Texas!!

A last question form the Redd School fifth grade: How much garbage (in weight) did the ship accumulate? And what happens to it?

Hi Lollie - you are starting your adventure today! Good luck - you'll probably see this when you return in January. I don't know the garbage total, but I'm sure it was a lot. While in port the garbage is loaded off the ship and taken away for disposal. During the cruise our garbage was incinerated. We had to be careful to not put any combustibles (aerosol cans, etc.) in the garbage. Batteries were also separated before burning.
Thanks for the nice comments about my journal - it was nice to have some time to do some writing - not something I typically get a chance to do (except papers for graduate school) during the school year.
