I'm Caitlin from St.Mark Catholic School and I have one Question to ask you about the data you collect.What precautions do you take to make sure that no data is lost or destroyed during the expedition?

Dear Caitlin,What a great question! There are multiple methods in place for data security.
First, the AWS has an internal data logger that runs on batteries. The batteries have a five year life expectancy, but are recharged during the summer months when there is adequate solar radiation. The data loggers have an internal memory that stores up to three years worth of data.
Second, each AWS has the ability to transmit data every hour to a satellite which relays the data to CIRES at the University of Colorado at Boulder. There, the data is analyzed and stored on four separate servers.
Third, some of the AWS have newer data loggers with an internal memory, but also a removable memory card. This makes it easier for the scientist to access the entire data set when in the field.
After the data is downloaded on to a field computer, Professor Steffen checks it for any errors and sends it to his servers in Colorado.
