Hello Michelle,

I got to hear your conversation with your friends in Boston the other night. Andy was the radio operator. I wonder if you ever used amateur radio before and also what you thought of the experience?

Hi Ray!
Thank you for tracking me down! I had never used a HAM radio before and thought it was incredible that I could connect with my friend thousands of miles away when I couldn't call or email them because the satellites had passed away from us. I have become a lot more interested in HAM radio, and hope to build one with my students when I return to the states! It was great to hear lots of other people that connected with Andy too. Sometimes I'll sit in the HAM shack with him and just listen.
Thank you for reaching out and maybe I'll talk to you again from the HAM radio!
Sincerely,
Michelle Brown

Hi Michelle,Thank you for writing back. I am truly fascinated by the South Pole station and I have been following you blog posts. I would really like to visit the Pole but I doubt I will ever have the opportunity. I am a Hazardous Materials Specialist and I work for the State of Virginia. I respond to train derailment, truck accidents, and other incidents where dangerous chemicals are spilled. I don't think there is much call for such a skill set in Antarctica.
If you decide to set up a ham radio station at you school please contact me. I have some gear that I could donate to the station. All the best in the New Year and thanks for posting the great blog spots.
