Ok, so I know it is supposed to be a QUESTION that SHOULD be related to your trip, and in a round about way, I will get to a question:) SO! First, I want to start by telling you that, cough, cough, you are one of my favorite teachers:) ANND that I am going to miss you terribly when you are gone:)! BUT!! I am super excited. Even though you are leaving us, and going to a very cold place, where you are going to try to find the tiniest, weirdest looking creatures, in a huge, vast ocean, I am still excited:)) Just because I get to say that MY science teacher is going to the Arctic, and I get to personally ask her questions that SHE will answer!! FROM THE ARCTIC!!:) You are famous!:) Now, in all seriousness, I have prepared a question for you..........How many pairs of underwear are you takingon your trip:)?? HA!:) You know you love meeeeee!:) annd, how do you do your laundry on the ship??:) Well, my mission is accomplished here. I made you smile, maybe even laugh:), i have asked a question, i have told you how missed you will be:) AND!! I even have a really long letter!:) haha:) I hope you have sooo much fun Ms. Rose, but not enough to stay there forever:) We need you back ASAP!:) -Hannah Wright<3

Chantelle Rose

Well, Hannah - you made me smile, and laugh....and even made me get a tear! Those were very nice things that you said and I appreciate it! You guys are GREAT students and I am so glad that you are excited about following the expedition! Thank you for your "story" - LOL...great questions....I will tell you about the laundry situation when I get on the ship. I only packed enough clothes to go about 4 days before needing to wash my clothes!!

I'll be sure to check in every day :) annd I'm glad you think we are great students, I've been told that we are the best class as a whole:)) Well I just wanted you to know that you are loved, annd will be missed:) and another question I have is, well I'll just save it until I get an answer to my last one so that I don't overwhelm you:))-Hannah Wright

Chantelle Rose

Hi Hannah...the science team tells me that water on the ship is quite the operation. I hope to get a tour and be able to tell you all about it AND laundry!! Tomorrow, we will move onto the ship so that should be interesting! Thank you for reading my journals....by the way - did you see yourself on the channel 2 news? : )

OMG!!:) i was super excited that i was on tv!:) even though i didn't speak, lol, i feel so important:) haha, i went home and told my mom, and she was like, there is no reason for you to be on tv, and i explained to her that you were going to the arctic and she could tell how excited i was. So she just said "wow Hannah, sounds cool:)" it was pretty funny. but the first person to call and tell me about it was Kayla!:) it was so funny, she was like hyperfentilating into the phone!! she's like "we're famous, we're on tv!!:))" Mrs. Traylor even turned it on in our 1st class, world history, and she let the whole class watch it:) i cant even imagine how you feel!!:)) ... annd i was wondering about the running water on the ship and how that worked:))

Chantelle Rose

You're a movie star - LOL. I enjoy talking to people, so talking on tv is the same thing really! Some news reporters are better because they understand the science I am talking about. Sweet that Mrs. Traylor let the class watch. About the water - I have been on the ship for 2 days, and I have water - there are some faucets that have regular water, hot and cold, you can get distilled water for science experiments from some and there is also a faucet that is seawater!!! That one is weird. I plan on getting a tour so that I can learn how the ship "makes" water! I'll post a journal about that when I do!!

Eww:) sea water?:) nothing like drinking some nice, fresh, fish pee:) haha:)) and I was thinking about that. Bc if you think about it, all houses have wells and pipe lines, and i know the ship has piping, but there isn't a well, obviously. So i didnt know if like the water was taken in and then purified?:) lol, so you'll have to let me know:) and how is the ship?! is it roooooomy??:) haha, and do u sleep in cots?:)

Anonymous

I just read your journals:) so i take back my question about the cots, lol!!:) but i absolutely LOVE your bed spread:) princesses are my favoritee:))!!!! oh, and i wanted to know if you take all of the pictures?:) bc if you do, then you are a very talented photographer:)

Chantelle Rose

The sea water faucet is more for animals (if you are catching animals to study)...so you can give them water that is most like the environment they are used to.No well - and I know they make the water - so I will find out! : )
The ship is definitely roomy...if you look at Nov 6 journal, you can see my bunk. I will do an entire journal on the ship too! : )

Chantelle Rose

Yes...I have taken almost all of the pictures - unless they have me in them! : ) And thank you!

soo!:) i absolutely love how u have mentioned me in 2 of yoour journals:)) i feel so important:))!! and i like how people on board contributed to my question:) haha...I also wanted to say that your boyfriend is such a sweet heart:))!!...ok, now i wanted to ask about the storm. ive read some of your answers to questions about the storm and ive noticed that u arent freaking out??:) how is that?! i'm scared for u and im not even there!!:) i know u have procedures, but i also know that being on a boat, in the middle of no where, in the middle of an alaskan storm that will go down in history, is not exactly safe:) so u'll have to let me know how that is goingg. also i wanted to ask if the jellyfish that u had a picture of, that lights up, i wanted to know if it stings you?:) annd i wanted to know if the copepods that u guys caught were alive? dead? frozen? asleep? idk:)-Hannah Wright

Chantelle Rose

The underwear question led naturally to the team helping to answer it! Yes - my boyfriend is a sweetheart! I am not freaking out about the storm because I know the Captain will keep us safe. I have an adventuresome spirit and like to live a bit on the edge of crazy! I guess this qualifies!!The jellyfish was incredible...I went to get it out of the cold room (a labroom that is kept at 40 degress) and when I put him into a smaller container, he lit up with electric blue lights. It was amazing! He stopped doing it after a while, and eventually we put him back in the ocean since the scientists weren't interested in him.
The copepods that we found in yesterdays tow were not in diapause (sleeping), they were still swimming around and going about their business. The scientists did say that there were much less than they normally get when they sample in the summer!

Anonymous

hmm:)) so you still have yet to find out what exactly these little copepod creatures are doingg:))annd ive come to notice that u do like to live on the wild side:))!! my goodness:) i love how calm u are being about all of this:))
how many different species did u catch? just the plankton and jelly fish?
have you seen any dolphins or whales?????!!!:) bc if u do i want pictures!!!!:))
annd lastly, stay safe:) i want my science teacher to return as a whole:) lol (also bc when mr.smith whistles, it hurts my ears)

Chantelle Rose

We have only done one tow and it was really only to test the equipment! : ) Of course, we looked at the critters we caught. I don't know the number of species exactly, but I'll tell you what I know: 1 rockfish, 1 larval fish of undetermined species, LOTS of ctneophore, a hydra medusa (jellyfish), a larval crab, 5 species of copepods (Calanus, Eucalanus, Pseudocalanus, Metridia, and Neocalanus), amphipod, krill, arrow worms and pteropod. Pretty cool stuff!!

Anonymous

i didnt know that there were different species of copepods, but ive always loved marine life:) so i love all of this stuff:)) i think its so interestingg:)

Chantelle Rose

I didn't know either until I came on this expedition!! It is so much FUN to learn new things!!________________________________

i suppose it is:)) lol, but how were u "invited" on this trip??

Chantelle Rose

Good question...I applied to the PolarTREC program through a written application that included references from teachers and principal. Then I had a few phone interviews to meet/talk with the researcher before she made her final selection about what teacher she wanted to bring aboard. This voyage was supposed to happen LAST winter, so I have been waiting quite a while!

Anonymous

wow, i didnt know you have been waiting this long. how come the trip didnt happen last winter??:) wasn't it because of something about the ship??

Chantelle Rose

Yes - we were originally scheduled to be aboard the Polar Sea - which was a much larger Icebreaker (the Healy that I am on now is a CUTTER - designed to CUT through the Ice). The Polar Sea had trouble with its engines and first they tried to fix them, then they just sent the ship to be decommissioned - that means it is no longer used. They had to get another ship and the Healy is the ONLY Cutter the United States has! It's designation is actually WAGB-20 (W = Coast Guard, AGB stands for Arctic Gun Boat)...I have heard there are guns aboard somewhere! So - it has been a long time coming!!!

well:) im glad uve gotten this opportunity:) so how is evrythingg there?:) have u gotten sea sick yet??:)

Chantelle Rose

It has been amazing...I have NOT gotten seasick yet! :) I probably won't if I haven't already! It is cold and dark...last night we did a net tow at 10:30 at night...super dark,3 degrees wind chill, but we got some AMAZING stuff. I'llpost a journal today about the animals we caught!!!________________________________

Ms. Rose I miss you so much!:) I can't wait until you get to come home...speaking of which, when is that?? annd I was wonderingg how you guys are going to spend Christmas??-Hannah Wright

Chantelle Rose

I should - keep your fingers crossed - be at school the DAY before Christmas vacation!!! I am not sure - I haven't done ANY Christmas shopping yet!! I am going to be CRAZY when I get home trying to get ready!!

Anonymous

sounds fun:)) lol, Christmas shopping was fun this year...but i dont know how you are going to do it all in one day?? i hope some one helped you out a little, and bought some stuff:)?

Chantelle Rose

Uhm...nobody helped me. I bought a few things on-line from the ship. I am going to make a killer shopping day out of next Thursday! I think I will be able to get it all done! :)
