so whats with all the gloves for different things how come you can't use just one pair or 2 pairs 7 thats alot

                                                                                                                                                alisha moore

Well...each glove has a different purpose, so you couldn't use them for something else. For example, the rubber gloves will be used when I am working with wet water samples. I wouldn't want rubber gloves on if I am not working with water. The thin gloves are neccessary because they will go UNDER my latex lab gloves...if I tried to use one of the padded gloves or work gloves, the latex gloves would rip. I agree - it does seem weird that I have to take that many!!!

ok i see why u need those to but man never have heard that you would need 7 piars just for one trip like that ok like maybe 3 or 4

Chantelle Rose

I know...pretty weird, huh? My bags are full of all sorts of winter gear!!

Anonymous

so how many bags do you have packed for your trip

Chantelle Rose

I will be posting a journal about this soon...I have two bags plus a backpack!!

ok I see ............ the answer to "Are there any bats in Alaska" ......The answer is proubly no because in the winter it is to cold for them .....Also, in the summer there is 24 hours of sunlight and they wouldn't be able to get food

Chantelle Rose

That is a good guess with solid reasoning for why the answer would be no....BUT Google it! I think you will be surprised!! : )

Anonymous

NO WAY..... thats crazy i didn't think bats could ever live there man if you never have asked i would have never known that.......you learn new things everyday i guess.....HAVE FUN

OH MY GOSH FIRST DAY BET YOUR EXCITED........... sooooooo are you excited .............. um soooooo like does the copepods just go into the machine or something else happen

Chantelle Rose

I am excited...we are about to set sail, so that will be even better! Basically, the copepods and other plankton and zooplankton are swimming through the water. As the water goes through the net, the animals are caught in a jar at the end of the net. That is the sample that we will look at to find them! : ) It's not a machine more like a process!

Anonymous

so it's a jar.....how big is the jar proubly good size right.....GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!

Chantelle Rose

The jar or codend is about the size of a 2 liter bottle, so pretty small.

Anonymous

that's pretty small for trying to catch copepods

Anonymous

that's pretty small for trying to catch copepods

Anonymous

MAN WHAT IS WITH THIS THING.....why does it keep repeating the questions for.............that's true they are SMALL.....BE SAFE

guess what MY BIRTHDAY is monday sooooo exciting......science is awsoome wish i could do things like you !!!!!!!!!

Chantelle Rose

Happy Birthday...and you CAN do things like me! All you have to do is research for opportunities and then apply for them! People who have a passion for learning can "find" these things to do!!

Anonymous

I will take your advise.... do you stay in the lab most of the time now that you have copepods

Chantelle Rose

I hang out in the lab mostly during the day. There are other things happening - like experiments that are based in the lab, so there is usually something going on!

Anonymous

NICE JOB ON THE LIVE THING.........that sounds like alot of work ........tell everyone nice job for me

Anonymous

yourzzzzz welcome ... did you by any chance talk about if copepods have body heat..... stupid quetion .... just curious.... I wasn't there the whole time!!!

Chantelle Rose

No body heat...copepods are invertebrates so they are cold blooded. Good question!

Anonymous

Wow I thought different ..... do they make any noice.. that would be weird if they did!!!!

Anonymous

oh Ok I thought they wouldn't but still had to ask to make sure

Anonymous

yep that's true you learn new things that way

Anonymous

yep you should always want to learn new things...... so how long did you keep those cups in the water

Chantelle Rose

Good question...they went to a depth of 1675 meters...and they were lowered at a rate of 20 meters per minute for the first 100 meters, then at a rate 60 meters per minute until the bottom. In the way up,the Nisken bottles are fired to collect water samples so that means they stop and hover t each depth they are going to sample for about 3 minutes. The short answer- the trip to the bottom and back took about 110 minutes - almost twohours!!!!

Anonymous

man you should have just stuck with the short answer cuzz you had lost me at the begining until the short answer part

Anonymous

you sent me a blank page

Chantelle Rose

It shouldn't have been blank...I said yes, it was good! Check out my journal from Thanksgiving to see pictures of the turkeys!!

Anonymous

this is the one I was talking about the cold... :)

Anonymous

Hope you enjoy the rest of ypur trip

Anonymous

urzz welcome

Anonymous

have you talked with anyone on the satilight phone

Anonymous

that would be soo cool to be able to talk on a satilight phone

Chantelle Rose

It is cool...but a little annoying because of the time delay between the time you say something and the time the other person hears it...it can lead to people talking over one another! : )

Anonymous

Wow that's crazy if you have to talk over people

Chantelle Rose

There is such a delay that you don't know the other person is talking until you have already started talking! It is weird!

Anonymous

That's srange

Anonymous

that would have been weird
