Does the research you are conducting tell us anything about global warming? If so, what does it mean?

Mr. Lampert!
What do you use your results for? How can your results/research help towards slowing down global warming?
Love,

Michael Lampert

Nice question, the research is focused on the coefficient of friction of glacier ice on bedrock. You need to have this number in order to figure out how fast glaciers might normally slide. climate change will certainly cause glacier's to recede at different rates, this has been going on for millions of years and currently it is progressing at an alarming rate.... knowing this coefficient of friction and how it depends on the melt rate, temperature, and mass of a glacier will give climate modelers more to work with in making their predictions of our future.

Michael Lampert

you can check the weather by typing into google Bodo Norway.... right now it is about 20C outside, super warm! the snow is mushy and I sink into it to my knees. the water will start filling the tunnels more rapidly now.

Michael Lampert

about half a foot a day for this one. although some glaciers go into a period where they rapidly advance if there is a lot of pressure from behind..

Michael Lampert

the pressure of a glacier causes the land to get smushed...it carves its way down valleys into the fjord, these are very heavy objects and so the compress the land.

Michael Lampert

all glaciers move by gravity... they just slide downhill. the largest glacier i am not sure of... but in Antarctica they are miles wide and deep. warm weather can cause melting which can make the glacier slip...lots of glaciers in the world, not sure if a count has been made.

Michael Lampert

its all about getting the coefficient of friction between ice and bedrock. like sliding animals down tables, you have to know how quickly they will accelerate. once they have this number the scientists can build models that make predictions.

1.) Does the galcier have a distinct smell? If so what does it smell like?2.) How far does the glacier move in a year?
Trent and Morgan! :)

Michael Lampert

funny you should ask about the smell, my water bottle is starting to take on the moldy smell of wet tunnel... but the glacier is just ice, no real smell... the glacier will move about 30 meters in the year
