Ha! Just love the whole North to Alaska piece that is part of your journal! So, glad that Elizabeth came to your school and BEFORE the expedition! This will take all of your experiences to a whole new level.

Looking forward to following your adventure and seeing what the students think about it too!

See you soon :) Janet

Thanks Janet, yeah, I also caught myself singing in the shower the other day the Alaska State Song. So...despite being totally swamped at school I'm definitely excited about the experience.Tom

Hello Mr. Lane,Seems 'Go North to Alaska, the Rush is On' would be more singable in the shower than the majestic Alaska State Flag Song, especially with that crescendo near the 'the great North Star with its steady light' and 'beacons bright'. (Or, maybe it's too early to awaken hibernating Vermont black bears?)
The whole investigative approach to Alaskan wilderness science sounds really exciting, especially for a kid from Chugiak (there must still be a kid in you, Mr. Lane if you're still climbing Denali on your 50th!). In Chugiak, there's the volcanoes in sight in the ocean, ancient glacier valleys, the mountains, lakes and Eklutna Valley and Glacier. For someone that could ski from the backdoor, and was always running, biking, climbing, yes the whole combination at the same time, and curiosity in the genes, you were made to help on this type of experience!!
Perhaps this project on carbon balance in warming and cooling tundra may have practical application in considering presence of hoarfrost on the porcelain products in inhabited human subterranean dwellings located adjacent to permafrost soils along the treeline, as well as juxtaposition of theses on the subject of glacier ice-worms and effects of on species evolution and adaptation to various geothermal influences.
Am hoping the upshot of this type research provides personal reference to Americans in influential positions the warning to avoid irreparable damage to tundra by opening up and plundering Arctic regions of North America, as the last great wilderness, as well as inspiring awe and wonder!
Take good care of our Great Land and have a wonderful experience with your owly-eyed bunch!
