How We Can Use Isotopes To Study Glaciers

Do you know what an isotope is? (If you are one of my students, the answer should be a resounding YES!!!!!)

Believe it or not, one of our REU students, Jessica Miles is taking sediment samples home and will use mass spectroscopy to identify isotropic ratios. She will use this information to determine bedrock source and age of the sediment coming from Kronebreen glacier.

The video below gives a quick review of isotopes and then an interview with Jessica discussing her research.

My computer shut down very early on in the presentation, before I even had a chance to ("An error occurred. Please try again later. Learn more"). Frankly, I was relieved. This seems a specialty I could bypass. But I know that if anyone can make it come alive, you (and Jessica) will!

Thanks for letting me know, Lucy. I just checked and it seems OK now. Give it another try...come on, isotopes, exciting stuff!! Ha ha.

Stephanie

I am impressed by this girl. She seems so smart.

The REU students are all very high caliber. They are some rock star undergrads, to be sure.

I am glad there is no quiz though.
